Community Projects

Over our forty-two year history LIGC has been involved in countless projects to better our community and educate our citizens. The Club has garnered many awards over the years for sponsorship, as well as providing the programs that keep these projects going. They are a part of the history of our Club and the legacy for our future.

Tree Walk Project

Our club initiated the Beaufort Tree Walk in the Historic Old Point in 2008, in conjunction with Beaufort’s designation as a ‘Tree City USA’. We have identified and mapped over thirty significant specimens, assembled an informative brochure, and gave the first invitational Beaufort Tree Walk in May 2008. Hundreds of people from as far away as England have walked The Walk. Visitors are able to obtain a copy of the Tree Walk at The Historic Beaufort Foundation, Beaufort County Library, or the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center. Chairwoman Cecile Dorr – our inspiration for this project, presents an update of our on-going project.

The Blue Star Marker

We had a rededication ceremony of our Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker on December 4, 2015 at it’s location in Brewer Memorial Park on Lady’s Island. In April of 2024, the marker was moved once again, approximately 79 feet away from where it had been located but in the same park. This was due to the installation of a large green receptacle placed by BJWSA that partially blocked the view of our marker. It is now closer to the road and more visible to all. We will be placing two wreaths on the Marker during National Holidays that were graciously donated by Maggie Engstrom of Sweet Bay Inc. of downtown Beaufort.

Thanksgiving Arrangements

Thanksgiving floral arrangements are placed at Bayview Nursing Home and the Beaufort Naval Hospital to be enjoyed by visitors and patients over the holiday.

Mother’s Day Floral Pinch Pots Project

A multi-club Beaufort Council of Garden Clubs project to honor women in assisted living environments & nursing homes in our area. Each club in the council takes a turn per year in this workshop to create miniature floral arrangements. We call this “Women honoring Women!”

CAPA Christmas Gift Program & Christmas Wreath Project for the National Cemetery in Beaufort and Books for Babies Program

Each December members “gift” new sleeping apparel for children in domestic violence shelters in the Beaufort County area. We also donate new books for parents to read to newborns.

Since 2009 we have provided wreaths for graves of fallen soldiers from all wars at the National Cemetery as part of the ‘Wreaths Across America’ Project.

House Tours in the Beaufort Area

As a Club we provide floral and other natural composition arrangements for homes on tours that benefit The Historic Beaufort Foundation and the Beaufort Arts Council, among others.
