2023 Awards

We are thrilled to announce that the Ladys Island Garden Club was recently awarded MULTIPLE 1st and 2nd place 2023 certificates from the West Low Country District of Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. These awards are an example of how hard the garden club members work in our community!

  • Legacy Gardening Award – FIRST PLACE was awarded for maintaining beauty within the Beaufort National Cemetary on a year round basis. In 2023, old shrubs and plantings were removed, soil was augmented and the area was redesigned keeping in mind the ancient live oaks and the historic significance of the brick wall which is part of the backĀ  border wall of the original cemetery (dating back to it’s dedication by President Abraham Lincoln on February 10, 1863).
  • Christmas Beautification Award – FIRST PLACE was awarded for decorating Fort Fremont for the holidays in preparation for their fundraising event. Greenery used was specific to the time period (1910) and Fort Fremont absolutely shined!
  • Yearbook Award – FIRST PLACE award for small clubs (25-30 members)
  • Garden Therapy Award – SECOND PLACE for working with the residents at The Retreat to create floral displays that they could keep in their rooms. Real flowers and artificial flowers and greenery were utilized. The residents noted how nice it was to have real flowers!
  • Arbor Day or Earth Day Celebration Award – SECOND PLACE. The Ladys Island Garden Club was looking for an opportunity to educate our youth about the importance of the loss of trees on our island and what we can do to offset these losses through involvement in replanting of trees and learning how to do it wisely to help guarantee healthy future Growth. Working in conjunction with Jay Weidner (owner/proprietor of J. Weidner Landscaping) and Mr. Adam Hakimji (Biology Teacher @ Beaufort High School whose class was studying National Sciences) the LIGC facilitated the planting of a Bald Cypress tree donated by Mr. Weidner for our South Carolina Arbor Day. The involvement of students, their teacher, Principal Ryan Walsh, Jay Weidner and his crew as well as local newspaper correspondent Lolita Huckabey and a contingent from LIGC participated in the tree planting and educational event.
